Live music is for EVERYONE. But for many fans, attending concerts comes with obstaclesโwhether itโs inaccessible venues, ticketing challenges, or a lack of accommodations. Despite these barriers, countless fans push through, proving that music knows no limits.
Thatโs why weโre launching Breaking Barriers: Fan Spotlightโa weekly series highlighting incredible individuals who have faced challenges in the live music world and found ways to overcome them. Their stories are about resilience, passion, and breaking down the walls that stand between them and the music they loveโshowcasing why everyone deserves to see their favorite band, even if it means having to work a bit harder.
But more than that, these stories are here to show others who think they ๐๐๐งโ๐ญ that they absolutely ๐๐๐ง. Whether itโs finding new ways to navigate a venue, advocating for change, or leaning on the music community for support, these fans prove that barriers are meant to be broken.
For our first feature, weโll be sharing Mike Hosoda's story. Mike, or better known as the Wheelchair Crowdsurfer of Vegas, has been a prominent figure in the Vegas area when it comes to metal shows. This is him onstage with Underoathย in 2017 absolutely SHREDDING his vocal cords to the ending of 'Young & Aspiring.' He started surfing at shows in 2014 at the Vans Warped Tourย but really started becoming known around town for it in 2016 on the Rebirth tour - he surfed for Underoath and Spencer loved it so much he pulled him onstage, which started an amazing relationship with them, and now anytime they come through Vegas he surfs and they pull him up. As far as obstacles, he thinks just having security be a little more mindful of disabled people at shows, we want to get in the pit like everyone else, but obviously there's a bit more to us what with our wheelchairs/other mobility devices. He trys not to go to shows at House of Blues here in Vegas very often. After having a bad experience with them at a show, and the poor customer service left a bad taste in his my mouth.
Keep breaking barriers, Mike! The world needs more individuals like yourself.
